Self portrait

This was the first project i did in my Adobe illustrator class, we were limited to ten colors. I really struggled because i couldnt see how to translate the drawing to flat shapes of shadow. We learn all through out school how to make things three dimensional and not flat. To now work backwards kind of threw me off but definitely taught me alot in the end.

PS much more fifth semester work to come!

Book Cover

I rendered this in Adobe Illustrator on top of a drawing. The assignment was to create a book cover using the original typography. I usually dont like using illustrator beacause everything looks really flat, but if thats the look your going for then it works well.

Advantages of Computer

The first one i drew in water color pencil then found a picture i took at the moma of this chandelier of all broken dishes. I just combined them in photo shop. The next one i did for heidi youngers class, just took a few sketches from my niles drawings and paintesd a backround and made a story out of it. Using digital programs can be a very useful tool without making artworks look like they are digitally done.

Lady Peacock

This peace done in gouache was for my core class illustrating "beauty" I struggled on what to do here since the project was so broad i kind of just made it a free for all. Peacocks are a known symbol of beauty. They were known to have challenged the phrase "survival of the fittest" since they did not necessarily need there feathers to survive, but there beautiful tail made it easier to find other mates. More info >> http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/evolution/library/01/6/l_016_09.html .... I was trying to contrast the dark colors and the sharp edged background with the soft purely color figure. I am trying to learn the difference between when to use reference and how closely to use it. Clearly i did not use it to throughly here which i am not sure if thats a bad thing or not.

Yellow Paint

This was a full page illustration i did for Heidi Youngers Class illustrating the story "Yellow Paint" by Robert Louis Stevenson. We had to break down the meaning of the story and illustrate it. To me i saw a lot of religious symbolism in the story. The fact that this man is going blindly with the crowd and just trusting this paint, just like some of us trust religion unquestionably. I hope you can notice the demons in the yellow paint, click the image for a larger view. I wanted to contrast the madness of the paint with the serenity of the figure. I scanned my sketch into the computer and painted it on photoshop, and had so much fun doing it!

Peepin'

So this long passing winter break was fun, felt a little art deprived and wanted to try something different. I had a photography craving so i found this video online about making your own fisheye lens with a door peep hole, duck tape and cardboard. I had alot of fun shooting around with it, i love to draw, but making any form of art at all i find so exciting.
